Forklift trucks

Forklift trucks are used around the world on industrial sites to move and lift working materials, as well as being used on industrial sites they are also used in warehouses and in manufacturing. The first form of a forklift was used back in 1906 in America and in the UK during the First World War, and then in 1917 the company Clark began to develop a lifting truck with the company Yale & Towne shortly following the idea in the 1920s. They continued to be developed and in 1956 Toyota brought out their first forklift.

There are a number of different types of forklifts that are used for different types of lifting, an example of some of these are;

  • Guided narrow aisle trucks these forklifts can be rail or wire and can lift in two forms 'man-riser' or 'man-down', this allows the driver to be able to see better as well as being able to break up the bulk of the loads. This forklift does need to be operated on a particularly flat floor.

  • Articulated counterbalance trucks these are very different to the original forklift models, they have a front wheel steer and a particularly narrow aisle, so they can be used to offload as well as stacking. They are also very popular to use when storing pallets, for use when storing at big heights and in narrow places.

  • Explosion proof trucks these are for specialist use for moving potentially dangerous loads such as chemicals, pharmaceutical products or food and drink as well as flammable materials.

  • As there are some many different kinds of forklifts they all have different lifting capabilities, from one ton to five tons, and the larger forklifts can lift up to 50 tons. Some of forklifts are also able to tlint their blades, this allows them to lower the load better and decrease the chances of slipping.

    If you operate or drive a forklift truck you must have a regular forklift inspections, as you have a legal obligation to ensure that it holds a current report of thorough examination just like a car's MOT test.
